The Lincoln Center Art Galleries in Fort Collins, Colorado, will present “Surface Tension,” a photographic series by UO Professor Terri Warpinski with poetry by Laura Winter, September 12 through November 1, 2014.
“Surface Tension” is a series of photographs by Warpinski exploring the political borderlands along the U.S.-Mexico border and the Occupied Palestinian Territories juxtaposed against images of present-day Berlin, Germany.
While Warpinski’s photographs can be viewed purely as stark records of the physical evidence of the political concerns between nations and the impact they have on the natural environment, the addition of Winter’s poetry reminds viewers of the social and psychological impact these borders have on the people who live in their shadows. Thoughtful pairings of multiple images offer the viewer opportunities to consider the circumstances from multiple perspectives. Together the words and images present a contemplative experience of these imposing physical, political, and psychological divides.
At the opening reception on Friday, September 12, Warpinski will give a talk at 5 p.m. about her artwork and travels. A public reception for the artists will follow from 6-7 p.m.
Warpinski expressed her thanks for support she has received while working on “Surface Tension.”

I am ever so grateful to the UO and in particular the School of Architecture and Allied Arts and the Department of Art, the Society for Photographic Education and its journal Exposure, the Oregon Art Commission, The Ford Family Foundation, and the Playa Residency Program at Summer Lake. Each of these entities, and the great people who work on their behalf, contributed in significant ways to the realization of the work.”
After the exhibition closes in Colorado, it will travel to Nebraska to be shown in joint exhibitions in Lincoln and Omaha, and then in spring 2015 will be at Northwestern University. Plans for 2015-16 are still under way.
Admission to the Lincoln Center Art Galleries and the opening reception events are free. Gallery hours are Tuesdays-Fridays from 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m., and most evenings during theater performances.
