Seberiana Lopez / Long Live
My art is a rediscovery of identity and representation. Through my work, I explore the themes of stolen or lost identity that inspire self-worth and strength. From these themes, I can communicate stories of the past, present, and future of Latine experiences. I use digital platforms to create designs usable in various places. Aspects I bring into my art to convey identity significance; I examine the importance of cultural figures and practices. These designs show up in the media to give knowledge to the viewer of the stories that have yet been told.
My passions inspired my thesis of wanting to share visual imagery I often saw growing up in California as a Chicana. My passions to learn more about the relationship between Latin identity and its association with religious imagery influenced me to create this artwork.
Within this work, I have created a series of digital drawings that are drawn on representations of the Virgin de Guadalupe in conjunctions with snakes, masks, corn, flowers, birds, etc. To further create the ambiance of an altar, I used various frames in different materials and sizes. Some frames also have mosaic designs that I created, along with the beads that mimic rosaries. The goal of this work was to develop illustrations that exhibited the cultural values of the Chicano community and the visual symbols that show that. I wanted to express the significance of imagery and iconography symbols that the Latino community uses to share stories of pride and culture.
When people visit this piece, I hope they have they have the opportunity to be able to experience a space that shares traditions and values. My work is an invitation for people to explore the lives of the Chicano community through art. Visual narratives work as a way to share community and I hope the work I produce continues open the discussion of culture and values.
