Sierra Baker / String of Connection
My artistic practice is rooted in the belief that creativity grows through chaos, curiosity, and connection. I am drawn to unfamiliar places, spontaneous collaborations, and the unknown. Saying yes to new experiences helps me explore freely and make work that blurs the line between real and imagined. I believe meaning comes from process, from making, feeling, and reflecting.
I am fascinated by storytelling, food, and the hidden forces that shape our lives. Theories like the red string, dream logic, and simulation are not proof to me, but metaphors that reveal how much we seek connection and meaning. My art often begins with a question: What if time folds? What if dinner with strangers heals? I try to create immersive experiences that encourage curiosity, empathy, and wonder.
String of Connection is a multimedia piece inspired by the closure of international adoption from China. As a Chinese adoptee, this moment brought deep emotions of grief, reflection, and longing. The work explores themes of belonging and fate through red string theory and six degrees of separation, suggesting that our lives are invisibly yet powerfully linked.
This project also speaks to a larger cultural shift. The end of international adoption from China impacts not just family formation but also disrupts ties to identity, heritage, and community. Through this piece, I honor the invisible threads that connect adoptees, families, and histories. Even through distance and change, connection remains.
