Lane Webster / High Four
Outside of the ceramic medium, I enjoy drawing and painting as they enable me to create unimaginable scenes and objects, often floating in and out of one another while defying the laws of physics. Starting with a seed of such playful absurdities leads me to investigate how they could be executed in the physical realm by way of clay. This reinterpretation often requires solving complicated technicalities, as I strive to both bewilder people and challenge myself through these processes. Having the liberty to fabricate something sourced from the most humorous and bizarre portions of my mind, while also having the technical skill to precisely execute my vision provides me with a level of autonomy I was unaware could be reached. These objects should be mysterious in its execution, begging the question as to how they have been made.
Centering human joy is deeply intertwined with my creative practice. Nothing truly makes me happier than witnessing or interacting with someone who feels connected to or excited about an object of my creation. I firmly believe my sensual work is accessible to everyone, with different themes resonating stronger for some than others. The word sensual itself can allude to the general condition of being pleasing or fulfilling to the senses, and to the specific enjoyment of sexual pleasure. The primary subjects I surround are touch, interaction, and play, while giving a nod to sexual liberation. Whether colorful hues, characters, and satisfyingly smooth forms are the source of one’s fulfillment, or humorous innuendoes like condom vases or suggestive chairs translate to normalize and celebrate sexual liberty and health, nobody should have to think about anything negative while looking at my work. Its creation is meant for pure enjoyment and the allowance of present encapsulation, providing an escape for anyone with a want or need to be absorbed into a world of wonder.
