Apply for a Master of Science in Sports Product Design (Portland campus only)

The Master of Science in Sports Product Design (SPD) graduate program admits one cohort each year, with enrollment beginning fall term.

Application Timeline
Priority Deadline: January 15
  • Part 1: Division of Graduate Studies' Application:
    • Application Opens:  September 15. 
  • Part 2: SPD Application:
    • Application Opens: October 15.
  • Application Review: Applications are reviewed after the January 15 priority deadline. Applications received after January 15 will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the admitted cohort reaches capacity.  
  • Admission Decisions:  Admission decisions are sent by email 4–8 weeks after the priority application deadline. For applications submitted after the priority deadline, decisions are typically sent 4–8 weeks after the application is received.
Application Process
  • Complete Parts 1 and 2.
  • Both applications, recommendations, transcripts, and portfolios must be submitted online, to be reviewed.
  • Do not mail hard copies to the Department of Product Design or the Graduate School.

Part 1: Complete the Division of Graduate Studies' Application

 

This application requires:

  • Official transcripts.
  • Personal and educational background.
  • English language proficiency (if applicable).

English Language Proficiency Requirements:

Required for applicants whose primary language is not English. One of the following must be provided:

  • TOEFL (iBT or Home Edition): 
    • Minimum score 88.
    • Institution Code: 4846.
    • Department Code: 4401.
  • IELTS (Academic): 
    • Minimum overall band score 7.0.
  • Degree from an approved English‑speaking country:
    Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, or the United States.

Important Notes:

  • Test scores must be less than 2 years old.
  • Duolingo English Test is not accepted.
  • Certificates stating “English as mode of instruction” are not accepted.

International Student Financial Requirement:

  • International students must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support one year of study.

  • $70 for U.S. applicants.
  • $90 for international applicants.

Part 2: Complete the SPD Application

This application requires:

  • One PDF containing all academic transcripts.
  • A 300-word essay of intent describing your interest in SPD and how you see yourself influencing the future of sports product innovation.
  • A 300-word experience statement, discussing your work, internship, academic, or personal experience related to SPD.
  •  A portfolio that demonstrates to the admissions committee your interest in SPD and your creative potential. We are looking for your ability to problem‑solve throughout the creative or scientific process, including:
    • Research and clear problem identification.
    • Hand and/or computer drawing skills.
    • Prototyping skills.
    • Storytelling.

Consider your portfolio as a demonstration of your overall design abilities.

  • Portfolio Specifications:
    • One PDF.
    • Maximum 20 pages.
    • Maximum 10 MB.
    • Submitted via SlideRoom. 

 

  • 3 letters of recommendation.
    • Recommenders will receive an automatic email invitation.
    • Restrictions:
      • No more than one letter from UO Product Design faculty:

        • Kiersten Muenchinger
        • Erdem Selek
        • Hale Selek
    • Letters from Tom Bonamici, Carly Mick, and Susan Sokolowski are not accepted.

READMISSION AFTER ACADEMIC DISQUALIFICATION 

Students academically disqualified from the SPD program may reapply after two years.

Reapplication requirements:

  • Updated essay of intent explaining how you are better prepared to succeed in the SPD program.
  • Updated experience statement providing evidence of new work or personal experiences related to SPD.
  • Updated portfolio providing evidence of continued innovation, creative growth, and advancement in design work.
  • Prior SPD performance and GPA will be considered.
