Amaya Gomez / Whale Fall
Whale fall occurs when a deceased whale has dropped to the ocean floor. This carcass then provides a food source for oceanic organisms particularly invertebrates such as echinoderms (sea stars), arthropods (crabs and shrimp), mollusks (octopus, mussels, and limpets), annelids (bone worms) and more. Whale fall is ecologically important because it supports an instant concentrated nutrient rich food source in deep sea environments and supports ecosystem as biodiversity hotspots. Whale fall is a vital part of ecological succession as the carcass decomposes aiding in different communities as they arrive at each stage. Whale Fall the piece came about by combining physical traditional mediums and technological engineering. My primary body of work is experimental storytelling with influences from ecological and biological roots.
