Isabel Gonzalez / Talent Show
I’ve always been fascinated by the intricacies of language, the inflection at the end of a question, the droning nasal undertone of sarcasm, the grating vocals of pain. As humans, so much of the meaning in what we say is held not in the words themselves, but instead in how they are said. As someone who identifies as a scientist in mind yet an artist at heart, this collective human choice to convey the majority of what we mean nonverbally both intrigues and frustrates me. Words have definitions, clarity, and precision. Nonverbal cues are subjective, unclear, and messy. What is the point in conveying something so important in something so misunderstood? Whether it be for a cathartic release of frustration, hiding meanings in social ciphers, or simply evolution not catching up yet, I explore this in my art. Through experimentations of visual clarity, context dependency, and media choice I hope to discover an answer to the question plaguing my work: Why do we communicate in a way so prone to error? In these errors I believe lies the reason we create, the reason we make and remake, try and try again, but why are we still unable to perfectly convey what we mean? The gap between the never-ending game of telephone we all play infuriates and inspires me.The scientist in me hopes to invent a perfect communication system that is errorless and able to convey and communicate accurately, perfectly, and empathetically. The artist in me, the winner of the argument, explores why we have the asymptotic limitation of no matter how many words are used, images are made, and no one can understand anything exactly as you do. Because of these errors, I carry the mantle, continuing to talk, make, and fail to communicate. Who knows, maybe a scientist will one day decipher the eons of humanity’s garbled cries, or maybe an artist will discover why we will never truly understand each other. Regardless, I research as a scientist, create as an artist, and wonder as a human.
