An exhibition of art and design work by graduating students in the University of Oregon in Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts will take place from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, June 2, during the annual Open House at the White Stag Block, 70 NW Couch Street. Student work from the Department of Architecture, the Digital Arts Program, and the Department of Product Design will be on display. The event coincides with Portland’s monthly First Thursday art walk.
“The Open House affords the opportunity to celebrate the tremendous accomplishments of our students as they complete their thesis and terminal projects, at the same time that it provides a platform to elevate discourse about design, art and the contemporary city,” said UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts Interim Dean Brook Muller.
This year’s architecture exhibition, “FORWARD,” will feature displays from studios including Transitional Housing Prototypes (Instructor Brian Cavanaugh), Next Generation Schools (Associate Professor Gerald Gast), and Repairing the Earth – Repairing the City (Associate Professor and Department of Architecture in Portland Head Hajo Neis). The projects, which will be viewable on Floor 4R and Floor 5, address a range of issues affecting the built environment.
The Digital Arts Program exhibition, “Sunny Side Up,” will present the culminating work of thirteen graduating BFA students on exhibition in the White Box. From pencil on paper to digital animation and video installation, the work pushes the collective understanding of digital arts.
"The open house for UO AAA in Portland serves as welcoming reception to our neighbors and to the Portland community as a whole,” said Cris Moss, White Box curator and director, who assisted in organizing the exhibition along with Digital Arts Program Associate Professor Ying Tan.
The Digital Arts Program exhibition features work by students Jiana Chen, Kathleen Darby, Anthony Hou, Jonny Kim, Sam Lillard, Clara Munro, Anna Pearson, Alex Prestrelski, Brandon Rains, Marion Rosas, Deandra “Sweet Dee” Stokes, Justus Vega, and Kendall Wagner. The exhibition will be displayed on Floor 1 in the White Box from June 2 to July 2, Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.
Product Design student work will also be on display on Floor 1. The exhibition, “BFA Product Design,” includes designs by Jinlong Yuan, Shane Moss, Sara Novak, Ian McCuaig, Matt Poppelaars, and Becky Chierichetti. The Product Design Program in Portland spring term 2016 was taught by Associate Professor and Department of Product Design in Portland Director Susan Sokolowski.
“It is a great time for us to share the creative and vibrant energy that thrives in the White Stag,” Moss said. “Visitors can expect conceptual and challenging work that highlights the achievements of the graduating class. The wide range of media on display serves as a window to the creative diversity and explorations of the UO student body.”
