Kim Karlsrud is Co-Director of Commonstudio, a collaborative practice at the intersection of art, design, and science that engages a broad understanding of the “Commons.” The studio’s work spans initiatives, interventions, installations, and research across multiple scales, often situated within urban landscapes.
Commonstudio’s projects have been recognized by Core77, Fast Company, and the Buckminster Fuller Institute, and exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the 2013 Venice Design Biennale. Together with collaborator Daniel Phillips, Kim received the 2014–15 Prince Charitable Trusts Rome Prize in Landscape Architecture and a 2017 residency at Headlands Center for the Arts.
Before co-founding Commonstudio, Kim established the Los Angeles chapter of Project H Design, a social design non-profit. She holds a BFA in Product Design from Otis College of Art and Design and an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan. Her solo artist residencies include Studio Kura (2019) and the Künstlergut Prösitz Symposium (2025).
