Susan Sokolowski

USA TODAY announced their annual list of the Women of the Year on February 27. The selection committee chose sixty-one women from across the country who are inspiring the next generation. Whether they are breaking institutional barriers, pushing for change, or leading innovation in their discipline, the women in this list represent the stories and experiences of women across the country. One such awardee is the School of Art + Design's Sports Product Design Professor, Susan Sokolowski, who has the distinction of representing Oregon.

Sokolowski has been recognized internationally and nationally for her achievements in design innovation and pedagogy. Sokolowski has over 30 years of experience in performance sporting goods for women and diverse and underserved populations. She was a longtime Nike employee who's many inventions for the company ranged from footwear components to moisture management garments and sports bra cups. In 2016, she left the company to found the Sports Product Design program at the University of Oregon, serving as its program director for years until 2024. Sokolowski is routinely sought after for her opinion and expertise by media and companies, and this year's honor reinforces her innovative spirit and commitment to delivering a novel education for upcoming designers who are able to create impact all over the world.

“It’s really amazing how small a program we are, and how short of time we’ve been in existence, and the reach we’ve had from around the world,” Sokolowski said. “What’s really cool is now we’re seeing our students out in the industry and they’re not only working here in Oregon, but they’re working internationally.”
